If you want a habit to stick, design for the lazy version of you. Lower the friction for the behavior you want and raise it for the behavior you don’t. Lay out workout clothes. Pre-cut vegetables. Keep distractions behind a password. Move the default.
The best time to build friction is before the moment of temptation, when you can think clearly. In the moment, you’ll do what’s easiest, not what’s wise. So make wisdom easy. When a good habit is the effortless option, it becomes self-reinforcing. And when a bad habit requires extra steps, you buy yourself time to choose differently.
