Depth is rare not because people dislike meaning, but because the environment is built to fracture attention. Open offices, chat tools, and “quick questions” make interruption feel normal and even friendly.
On top of this sits a cultural confusion: busyness is treated as proof of importance. If you respond instantly and stay visible, you look productive. The cost is hidden—your day becomes a chain of context switches, and each switch leaves residue that slows thinking.
Organizations drift toward shallowness because it feels easy. It takes no planning to fill a schedule with meetings, and no courage to keep communication channels permanently open. Depth requires explicit protection.
So rarity is structural. If you want deep work, you can’t wait for conditions to improve. You have to build them.
