People want autonomy. Even when they agree with your plan, they resist being commanded, because an order implies inequality.
Replace orders with invitations. Ask questions instead of directives: “What do you think is the next step?” “Would it help if we tried it this way?” A question preserves dignity.
When you must give instruction, state the result you need, then allow choice in the method when possible. Control over the “how” creates buy-in.
Leadership isn’t barking. It’s shaping conditions so people choose the right action willingly.
If you want people to follow, don’t make them feel like servants. Make them feel like capable contributors whose judgment matters. Respect autonomy, and cooperation becomes easier—and more durable. That is how authority earns consent.
